Laos label requirements for packaging

Goods sold in Laos need their label in Lao. Food follows Decision 519 of the Ministry of Health (2009); all consumer goods follow Ordinance 2501 of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (2015). Here is what goes on the pack, and how to lay it out.

Food and drinks: Decision 519/MoH

Decision 519/MoH of 2009 on food labelling, section 5.1, asks for the name of the food, the ingredients, the net contents, the name and address of the maker, importer or distributor, the country of origin, the production and expiry dates, storage, the registration number of the Food and Drug Department (FDD), and directions for use where needed. Section 5.3: name, net quantity and dates in a prominent place.

All consumer goods: Ordinance 2501/MoIC

Ordinance 2501/MoIC of 2015 on labelling asks for labels in Lao with the product name, the maker or importer, the country of origin, the quantity, the components, directions for use, warnings, production and expiry dates, and the price. Foreign languages may be added beside the Lao, in smaller letters.

Imported goods and stickers

Imported goods may carry a Lao sticker over the original label. For food, the FDD has required since July 2025 that the registration number be printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker (as reported in 2025) — confirm with your importer before you print.

Laying it out in Drint

  1. In the studio, click Insert → Product label and choose the market Laos and the goods group.
  2. Paste the client’s Lao text and a second language (Vietnamese, English, Thai or none) — Drint does not translate.
  3. Pick printed on the pack, a Lao sticker over the original label, or a hang tag. The second language is set smaller than the Lao.
  4. Check in Export lists the items that are still missing.

Questions

Is Lao compulsory on the label?

Yes. Ordinance 2501/MoIC asks for labels in Lao, and food labels follow Decision 519/MoH. Thai, English or Vietnamese may be added, smaller than the Lao.

What is the FDD number?

The registration number the Food and Drug Department gives a food product (ເລກທະບຽນ ອຢ). It goes on every food label; your importer gets it when the product is registered.

Can imported goods use a sticker?

Yes for most goods: a Lao sticker over the original label. For food, the FDD number is now expected to be printed on the pack — check with your importer.
