Cambodia label requirements for packaging

Every pack sold in Cambodia needs its label in Khmer. Food follows the Cambodian Standard CS 001-2000; other consumer goods follow the 2022 notice under the Law on Consumer Protection. Here is what goes on the pack, and how to lay it out.

Food and drinks: CS 001-2000

The Cambodian Standard CS 001-2000 on the labelling of prepackaged food (Prakas 1045 of 28 December 2000), section 4, lists what every label must carry: the name of the food, the ingredients, the net contents, the name and address of the maker, packer, distributor or importer, the country of origin, the lot, the date marking and storage instructions, and directions for use where they are needed.

Section 8.2: the label is in Khmer. Other languages may be added, in letters smaller than the Khmer. Imported food may carry a Khmer sticker over or beside the original label.

Other consumer goods: the 2022 notice

The notice of 23 September 2022 of the CCF (Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression Directorate-General) under the Law on Consumer Protection asks for eight items in Khmer: directions for use, ingredients or components, production and expiry dates, lot number, maker, functions, warnings and storage. A pack of 20 cm² or less may carry them on a tag or leaflet with the product.

Nutrition table

Whether a nutrition table is compulsory for all food is not settled: a 2022 Prakas makes it voluntary, while advisers read the 2022 Food Safety Law as requiring it. Ask your importer what the registration of your product needs.

Laying it out in Drint

  1. In the studio, click Insert → Product label and choose the market Cambodia and the goods group.
  2. Paste the client’s Khmer text and a second language (Vietnamese, English or none) — Drint does not translate.
  3. Pick printed on the pack, a Khmer sticker over the original label, or a hang tag. The second language is set smaller than the Khmer.
  4. Check in Export lists the items that are still missing.

Questions

Is Khmer compulsory on the label?

Yes. Food labels must be in Khmer (CS 001-2000, section 8.2) and the 2022 notice asks for the eight items in Khmer for other goods. English, Vietnamese or Chinese may be added, smaller than the Khmer.

Can imported goods use a sticker?

Yes. A Khmer sticker carrying the mandatory items may be put on the original label. Drint makes the sticker at the right size for the pack.

Can a label be Khmer and Vietnamese?

Yes, as long as the Khmer is the main text and the Vietnamese is printed smaller. Many Vietnamese goods sold in Cambodia do exactly that.
