Taiwan food label requirements

Pre-packaged food sold in Taiwan follows Article 22 of the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation: the container or outer pack shows, in Chinese and common symbols, the name, ingredients, net quantity, food additives, the responsible company, the origin, the expiry date and the nutrition label. The Ministry of Health and Welfare (TFDA) sets the details of nutrition labelling and allergens. Here is what goes on the pack, and how to lay it out.

Article 22 of the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation

The container or outer pack of food and food ingredients carries, clearly and in Chinese and common symbols: the name; the ingredients (two or more from the most to the least); the net weight, volume or number; the food additives; the name, telephone number and address of the maker or of the responsible company in Taiwan; the place (country) of origin; the expiry date; the nutrition label; genetically modified ingredients; and anything else the central authority announces. When only the Taiwanese company is shown, the maker’s or importer’s details are reported to the authority.

Under the Enforcement Rules, letters are at least 2 mm high and wide; on a pack whose largest surface is under 80 cm², items other than the name, the company and the expiry date may be smaller. The expiry date gives the year, month and day.

The nutrition label

TFDA’s nutrition labelling rules for packaged food ask for energy plus protein, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, carbohydrate, sugar and sodium, and any nutrient that is claimed. The table is per serving, beside either per 100 g (or ml) or the percentage of the daily value, with the serving size and the number of servings in the pack.

The amendment of 23 June 2022, in force from 1 July 2024, makes the per-serving and per-100 g figures agree and revises when a value may be shown as 0 — energy up to 4 kcal, sodium up to 5 mg and saturated fat up to 0.1 g per 100 g (ml); trans fat when total fat is at most 1 g or trans fat at most 0.3 g. A pack that is not labelled as required is fined NT$30,000 to NT$3 million.

Allergen warnings

Food containing crustaceans, mango, peanut, milk, egg, nuts, sesame, cereals with gluten, soy, fish or their products, or sulphites leaving 10 mg/kg or more in the product, carries a clear warning such as “this product contains …”.

Laying it out in Drint

  1. In the studio, click Insert → Product label and choose the market Taiwan and the goods group (food and drinks, or other consumer goods).
  2. Paste the client’s checked Chinese — Drint does not translate; add English or Vietnamese beside it if wanted. The maker’s or the Taiwanese company’s field carries its telephone and address.
  3. The block is set in letters of 2 mm or more on the back; for imports choose the sticker style, applied to the original pack before import inspection.
  4. Insert → Nutrition table → Table (Taiwan) lays out per serving beside per 100 g (or the % daily value), the serving size and the servings per pack, and prints 0 at the levels of the 2024 rules.
  5. Barcodes come from Insert → Barcode / QR code (Taiwan’s GS1 prefix is 471); Check in Export lists the items still missing and any letters under 2 mm.

Questions

Must the label be in Chinese?

Yes. Article 22 asks for Chinese and common symbols; other languages may be added beside it. Imported food usually carries a Chinese sticker applied before border inspection.

Do small packs carry every item?

Yes, but on a pack whose largest surface is under 80 cm², items other than the name, the company and the expiry date may be printed smaller than 2 mm.

Is per 100 g required?

Per serving is always shown, beside either per 100 g (ml) or the percentage of the daily value; the figures of both must agree.

Does Drint check Taiwan labels?

Yes. Insert → Product label → Taiwan lays out the block and lists the items still missing; the content itself comes from your client’s lab report and registration.
