Indonesia label requirements for packaging

Processed food sold in Indonesia needs a label in Bahasa Indonesia that follows BPOM Regulation 31/2018 (as amended by 20/2021), the halal rules of BPJPH, and the nutrition table of BPOM Regulation 26/2021. Other consumer goods follow Permendag 25/2021. Here is what goes on the pack, and how to lay it out.

Processed food: PerBPOM 31/2018

Pasal 5 lists what every label carries: the product name, the ingredients, the net weight or volume, the name and address of the maker or importer, halal for products that must carry it, the production date and code, the best-before date written “Baik digunakan sebelum”, the registration number (BPOM RI MD for food made in Indonesia, BPOM RI ML for imports, P-IRT for home industries), and the origin of certain ingredients.

Name, net weight, maker or importer, halal, best-before date and registration number go on the main panel (Pasal 5 ayat 2 as amended). Bahasa Indonesia comes first (Pasal 7); other languages may be added. Letters are at least as tall as an Arial lower-case “o” of 1 mm (Arial 6 pt), the product name and warnings 2 mm (Pasal 9).

Halal and “tidak halal”

Under Law 33/2014 on halal product assurance, food sold in Indonesia must be halal-certified, phased in by product group and business size — the dates have been moved more than once, so check the current schedule with BPJPH or your importer. A certified product carries the national Label Halal Indonesia: use the official file from BPJPH (Keputusan Kepala BPJPH 40/2022), never a redrawn one.

A product made from non-halal ingredients carries a “tidak halal” sign instead. Peraturan BPJPH 3/2026 gives two forms: “NON HALAL” in red, or “MENGANDUNG BABI” in red inside a red frame with a pig picture, for products containing pork. The sign sits where it is easy to see, never on a background that makes it hard to read.

Informasi Nilai Gizi: PerBPOM 26/2021

The nutrition table is per serving (takaran saji, with a household measure) and shows energy, total fat, saturated fat, protein, total carbohydrate, sugar and sodium, with % AKG on a 2150 kkal diet, rounded as Lampiran I says. Labels over 100 cm² use the vertical table; 100 cm² or less may use the horizontal table or one line; 30 cm² or less may put it on the outer pack, a website or a 2D code. Coffee, tea, bottled water, seasonings and additives need no table (Pasal 3). A front-of-pack summary is voluntary (Pasal 16).

Imported goods and other products

Imported food carries its Indonesian label before it goes on sale; a sticker over the original label is allowed if it is stuck firmly and does not peel off easily. Non-food consumer goods follow Permendag 25/2021: a label in Bahasa Indonesia naming who is responsible for the goods, on the pack or a hang tag.

Laying it out in Drint

  1. In the studio, click Insert → Product label and choose the market Indonesia and the goods group (processed food or other goods).
  2. Paste the client’s Indonesian text and a second language if needed — Drint does not translate.
  3. Choose halal: a frame for BPJPH’s official Label Halal Indonesia file, or the NON HALAL / MENGANDUNG BABI sign.
  4. Insert → Nutrition table builds the Informasi Nilai Gizi in the vertical, horizontal, one-line or front-of-pack format.
  5. Check in Export lists the items still missing and any text below the BPOM minimum.

Questions

Must the label be in Bahasa Indonesia?

Yes. Food labels are written in Bahasa Indonesia first (PerBPOM 31/2018 Pasal 7); English or other languages may be added. Imported goods use an Indonesian sticker or label.

What do MD, ML and P-IRT mean?

They are registration numbers: BPOM RI MD for processed food made in Indonesia, BPOM RI ML for imported food, and P-IRT for home-industry food registered with the regency health office. Write the number exactly as on the licence.

Can I draw the halal logo myself?

No. Use the official Label Halal Indonesia file from BPJPH, and only when the product holds halal certification. Drint leaves an empty frame for it on the label.

Is the nutrition table compulsory?

For most processed food, yes (PerBPOM 26/2021). Coffee, tea, bottled water, seasonings and additives are exempt, and alcoholic drinks may not show one.

A summary written to design packs, not legal advice. Check the original texts and the product’s registration with your importer, BPOM or BPJPH before printing.
