Georgia label requirements for packaging

Georgia’s Government approved the technical regulation «on providing food information to consumers» by Decree No. 301 of 1 July 2016; it has applied since 2019 and was amended in 2018, 2024 and 2026. It brings Georgia’s food labels close to the European Union’s Regulation 1169/2011, as the EU–Georgia Association Agreement provides, and covers food made in Georgia and imported alike. The National Food Agency checks it.

Food: Decree No. 301

Article 8 lists what every prepackaged food states: the name; the list of ingredients; the allergens; the quantity of certain ingredients; the net quantity; the date of minimum durability or the use-by date; special storage conditions and conditions of use; the name and address of the food business operator; the country or place of origin where needed; instructions for use where needed; the alcoholic strength above 1.2 %; and the nutrition declaration.

The ingredients follow a heading with the word «შემადგენლობა», in descending order of weight. The 14 allergen groups of Annex 1 are set apart in the list by type — bold, italic, a colour — and, where there is no list, follow the word «შეიცავს» (Article 20).

Article 12: the mandatory text has an x-height of at least 1.2 mm; on packs whose largest surface is under 80 cm², at least 0.9 mm. The name, the net quantity and the alcoholic strength stand in the same field of vision — the part of the pack read from one point.

Georgian on the pack

Article 14: the mandatory food information is given in Georgian. Another language may stand beside it — in practice English or Russian on imports — but the Georgian is complete and at least as legible. An imported food is given a Georgian label or sticker before it is sold.

Dates and nutrition

Article 23 and Annex 9: the date of minimum durability reads «უმჯობესია გამოყენებულ იქნეს …-მდე» (best before), followed by the day and month, the month and year, or the year, depending on how long the food keeps; very perishable food reads «გამოიყენება …-მდე» (use by). Fresh fruit and vegetables, vinegar, table salt, sugar and chewing gum are exempt.

Article 28: energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt, per 100 g or 100 ml, in one field of vision; values per portion may be added. Trans fat is voluntary.

The packaging itself

Packaging meant to touch food follows Decree No. 317 of 2018 on materials and articles in contact with food, built on EU Regulation 1935/2004: Article 10 asks for the words «for food contact» or the glass-and-fork symbol, unless the use is obvious. Ask the client’s packaging supplier for the material code and the recycling marks they use.

Laying it out in Drint

  1. Drint has no Georgia label kit yet and does not check these rules. Lay the label on the back panel with Insert → Product label or text blocks.
  2. Paste the client’s Georgian text as it is — Drint does not translate. Set the allergens in bold.
  3. Insert → Nutrition table builds a per-100 g table; edit it to the seven rows of Article 28.
  4. Keep the mandatory text at an x-height of 1.2 mm or more (0.9 mm on packs under 80 cm²): with most Georgian faces that means about 7 pt or larger.
  5. Check in Export still finds text near the cut, small text, low-resolution pictures and ink problems.

Questions

Must the label be in Georgian?

Yes. Article 14 of the technical regulation asks for the mandatory information in Georgian; other languages may be added beside it, and imports are given a Georgian sticker before sale.

How small can the text be?

An x-height of at least 1.2 mm, or 0.9 mm when the largest surface of the pack is under 80 cm² (Article 12).

Is it the same as the EU label?

Very close: the regulation follows EU Regulation 1169/2011 under the Association Agreement — the same particulars, allergens, nutrition rows and font size. A pack made for the EU usually needs a Georgian version of its text, not a new layout.

What changes in 2027?

Decree No. 300 of 3 July 2026, in force from 1 January 2027, lets sausages name the animal whose meat they hold only in the main field of vision and only when that meat is over half of the meat used.
