Armenia label requirements for packaging

Armenia has been a member of the Eurasian Economic Union since 2 January 2015, so packaged food sold there follows the Union’s technical regulation TR CU 022/2011 «Food products in terms of their labelling», in force since 1 July 2013 and amended in 2017, 2018 and 2024; Armenia’s Food Safety Inspection Body lists it among the regulations it applies. The packaging itself — boxes, bottles, film, caps — follows TR CU 005/2011 «On safety of packaging». Armenia’s own laws add the state language: information on goods is given in Armenian.

Food: TR CU 022/2011

Article 4.1 lists what every packaged food states: the name; the composition; the quantity; the date of manufacture; the shelf life; the storage conditions; the name and location of the manufacturer (and of the importer or authorised representative); recommendations or limits of use; the nutrition value; the presence of GMO components; and the single mark of circulation on the Union’s market (EAC).

The composition follows the word «Состав» (in Armenian «Բաղադրությունը»), ingredients in descending order of mass. Fifteen allergen groups are always named, however little is used. Products with aspartame say «Содержит источник фенилаланина»; sugar alcohols and certain azo colours carry their own warnings.

Since EEC Council Decision No. 75 of 2018, the name, the quantity and the figures of the date of manufacture and shelf life are set at least 2 mm high (lowercase letters); the composition, storage, manufacturer and the words that introduce the dates at least 0.8 mm. Text contrasts with its background and stays legible for the whole shelf life (4.12).

A picture of a prepared dish says it is a serving suggestion, and no picture shows food that is not in the pack.

Armenian, and Russian

TR CU 022/2011 (4.1, part 2) asks for Russian, and for the state language of the member state where its law requires it. Armenia’s Law «On language» (No. ՀՕ-52 of 17 April 1993) makes Armenian the state language, and its Article 4 has signs, forms and all means of advertising made in Armenian, other languages beside it where needed. The Law «On protection of consumers’ rights» (No. ZR-197), Article 9 as amended by Law ZR-11, has the producer or seller give information on goods in Armenian.

In practice food sold in Armenia carries Armenian, usually beside Russian, and often English for export packs; imported food gets an Armenian sticker before sale. The manufacturer’s name and address of an imported product may stay in Latin letters (4.8, part 3).

Armenian letters need a font that has them: GHEA Grapalat (the state’s standard face), Noto Sans and Noto Serif Armenian, Arian AMU. A Latin-only font prints empty boxes.

Dates and nutrition

Articles 4.6 and 4.7: up to 72 hours of shelf life, hour, day and month; up to 3 months, day, month and year; longer, month and year. The shelf life follows «годен до» (in Armenian «պիտանի է մինչև»), or «годен до конца» with month and year.

Article 4.9: energy in kilojoules and kilocalories, protein, fat and carbohydrate in grams, per 100 g or 100 ml or per serving, declared when each is at least 2 % of the adult reference intake; added vitamins and minerals are always declared. Coffee, tea, spices, salt, vinegar, bottled water, chewing gum and raw produce are exempt.

The packaging: TR CU 005/2011

Article 6: the packaging is marked so its material can be identified and collected — the digital code and/or letter abbreviation of the material from Annex 3 (for example 01 PET, 05 PP, 20 PAP, 81 C/PAP for a paper–plastic laminate) and the symbols of Annex 4: the glass and fork for packaging meant for food, the Möbius loop for recyclable packaging. The marking is durable and goes on the pack or, if it cannot, in the accompanying documents.

The EAC mark

Food and packaging that have passed the Union’s conformity assessment (a declaration or certificate) carry the EAC single mark of circulation, set by Customs Union Commission Decision No. 711 of 15 July 2011. Use the official proportions: the three letters on a square grid, black on light or light on dark, at least 5 mm high.

Laying it out in Drint

  1. Drint has no Armenia label kit yet and does not check these rules. Lay the label on the back panel with Insert → Product label or text blocks.
  2. Paste the client’s Armenian and Russian text as it is — Drint does not translate.
  3. Insert → Nutrition table builds a per-100 g table; edit it to energy (kJ / kcal), protein, fat and carbohydrate.
  4. Leave a frame for the official EAC mark file and draw the material code and Möbius loop from the client’s packaging supplier.
  5. Check in Export still finds text near the cut, small text, low-resolution pictures and ink problems.

Questions

Must the label be in Armenian?

Yes. TR CU 022/2011 asks for Russian and for the member state’s language where its law requires it, and Armenia’s consumer-rights law has information on goods given in Armenian. Most packs carry Armenian and Russian side by side; imports get an Armenian sticker.

How small can the text be?

Since 2019 (EEC Council Decision No. 75 of 2018): the name, quantity and date figures at least 2 mm, the other required particulars at least 0.8 mm, measured on lowercase letters.

When can the EAC mark go on the pack?

Only after the product has a declaration of conformity or certificate under the Union’s technical regulations. Use the official artwork, never a redrawn one.

Can I print brandy or wine labels from this page?

No. Alcoholic drinks follow their own rules (the Union’s regulation on alcohol and Armenia’s own laws, with excise stamps); this page covers food labels and packaging only.

A summary written to design packs, not legal advice. Before printing, check the current consolidated text of TR CU 022/2011 and TR CU 005/2011 on the EEC portal, Armenia’s laws on arlis.am, the product’s declaration or certificate, and the official EAC mark with your client, the Food Safety Inspection Body or a certification body.
