Best Packaging Dieline Generator with 3D Preview
By Nguyễn Thành Dân, Founder of Drint · · Updated
A good dieline generator does three things: it builds a standard FEFCO or ECMA structure at your exact size, exports files your die-maker can open, and shows the folded box in 3D first. Drint does all three in the browser. It exports PDF, AI, SVG, DXF and CF2, and dielines with 3D preview are free to use.
What is a dieline generator?
A dieline is the flat layout of a package showing cut lines, crease lines and glue flaps. A dieline generator creates that layout from a structure type and dimensions so you do not draw it by hand. Folded wrongly drawn dielines cause real cost: a die made from a bad file is expensive to remake.
What should I look for?
| Criterion | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Standard structure codes | Printers and die-makers speak in codes | Does it list FEFCO / ECMA codes? |
| Exact dimensions | Product must fit | Can I enter length, width, height? Inside or outside? |
| Export formats | Your printer's software must open it | PDF, AI, SVG, DXF, CF2? |
| Line types | Cut and crease must be distinguishable | Are cut and crease different colours or layers? |
| 3D preview | Catches wrong folds early | Can I see the folded box? |
| Artwork placement | Saves a separate step | Can I place artwork on the dieline? |
| Print-file output | Closes the loop | Preflight and PDF/X-4? |
| Pricing model | Cost to export | What is free and what is limited? |
Why is 3D preview important for a dieline?
A flat dieline is hard to check by eye. A flap that looks right in 2D can collide with a panel when folded, and text can end up upside down on one face. A 3D preview shows the finished box so the client sees it too. Drint's 3D Studio has 1,650 base models and 76,000+ ready 3D packaging mockups to compare structures against.
How does Drint generate a dieline?
- Choose a structure, by name or by FEFCO/ECMA code.
- Enter the dimensions.
- Preview in 3D.
- Export the dieline as PDF, AI or SVG.
- For die-makers, export DXF or CF2 (Pro).
- Continue to artwork, preflight and PDF/X-4 export if needed.
Free accounts get 3 SVG dieline files a month, in the app and through the MCP server (both count the same way). PDF / AI, DXF and CF2 need Pro, which is unlimited.
You can also generate one from ChatGPT or Claude: "Create a mailer box 300×220×80 mm and export the dieline as PDF." See connection guide.
What are the common structures?
| Structure | Typical use | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping carton, flaps meet in the middle | Shipping | FEFCO 0201 (default 300×200×220 mm) |
| Mailer box with hinged lid | E-commerce mailer | FEFCO 0427 (default 250×200×80 mm) |
| Reverse tuck end (RTE) | Cosmetics, small goods | ECMA A20.20.03.01 (default 80×50×140 mm) |
| Inverted reverse tuck end | Cosmetics, small goods | ECMA A20.20.01.03 |
| Paper bag, rigid box, drawer, pillow box, sleeve, pouch | Retail, gifting, takeaway | Drint structure types without a standard code in this list |
Codes and default sizes come from Drint's dieline catalogue (about 180 FEFCO and ECMA codes in total, checked 28 October 2026). Confirm the code with your printer before quoting it.
Dieline export formats: which do I need?
| Format | Used for |
|---|---|
| Sharing and review, many printers | |
| AI | Editing in Adobe Illustrator |
| SVG | Web, many vector editors |
| DXF | Cutting machines and die-making software |
| CF2 | Die-making CAD workflows |
Ask your die-maker which they want before exporting.
How do I choose between tools?
Run one job through each candidate: the same box, same dimensions, same artwork. Compare the exports in your printer's software. If you need to compare with another tool such as Pacdora, see our Drint vs Pacdora comparison, which cites Pacdora's public pricing pages. Verify any feature on each tool's own site before deciding.
What mistakes should I avoid?
- Not specifying inside vs outside dimensions.
- Forgetting board thickness.
- Placing text across creases.
- Sending a JPEG screenshot instead of a vector file.
- Using a dieline from a stock site without checking it against your product.
Comparison: dieline generator types
| Type | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Browser packaging tool (e.g. Drint) | Exact size, standard codes, 3D, exports | Needs account for downloads |
| Desktop CAD for packaging | Deep structural control | Learning curve and licence cost |
| Free template downloads | Quick | Fixed sizes; accuracy varies |
| General design tools | Familiar interface | Not built around packaging structures |
How do I test a dieline before ordering a die?
- Print the dieline at 100% on plain paper or light card.
- Cut and fold it by hand around a dummy of your product.
- Check that the product fits with the clearance you want.
- Confirm that flaps close and glue areas are large enough.
- Compare the 3D preview with the hand-folded sample; they should agree.
- Only then send DXF or CF2 to the die-maker. Confirm the format and tolerance with the die-maker first.
This costs little and catches the dimension mistakes that matter most.
How do I pick a structure for my product?
| Product | Things to consider | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy goods shipped by post | Board strength, crush resistance | Corrugated regular or mailer style |
| Cosmetics | Presentation, small size | Folding carton, tuck end |
| Gifts | Opening experience | Lid-and-base styles |
| Food | Material regulations, grease resistance | Confirm with the packaging supplier |
| Retail takeaway | Handle strength, flat storage | Paper bag |
Do not treat this as final advice. Material and regulation questions belong with your packaging supplier.
What should a good generator also give me?
Beyond the flat file, look for a place to put artwork, a check before export, and a route to a print file. Drint continues from the dieline into preflight, CMYK PDF/X-4, imposition and a handoff package, so the dieline is not a dead end. That matters because most production errors happen when files move between tools.
Next step
Try one real box. Pick a structure from the dieline codes, enter your size and check the 3D preview before you send anything to a die-maker. Choosing a box first? Read FEFCO 0201 vs 0427. Comparing tools? See Drint as a Pacdora alternative. Working from an AI assistant? Follow the MCP connection guide.
