Drint MCP: Create Packaging Dielines & 3D Mockups with ChatGPT or Claude
By Nguyễn Thành Dân, Founder of Drint · · Updated
Drint's MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude and other MCP assistants make packaging dielines at exact sizes and search 76,000+ 3D packaging mockups, inside the chat. You connect once to https://drint.io/mcp. Then you ask in plain words, for example "make a mailer box 300×220×80 mm". The assistant returns the dieline file or a link that opens the result in Drint.
What is the Drint MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call external tools. Drint's MCP server exposes packaging functions to the assistant: structural dielines (FEFCO and ECMA codes), exact-size dieline files, mockup search, and links that open a project in the 3D Studio.
Drint itself is packaging design software that covers the path from dieline to print file: 3D preview, preflight, CMYK PDF/X-4 output, dieline export, imposition and a handoff package for the printer. The MCP server gives an AI assistant access to the first part of that path.
What can the assistant actually do with it?
| Task | What you ask | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Find a structure | "Which FEFCO code is a standard mailer box?" | A list of matching dielines with codes and a link to design on them in Drint (no account needed) |
| Make a dieline at an exact size | "Mailer box 300×220×80 mm, PDF" | PDF, AI or SVG dieline at the specified dimensions |
| Make die-maker files | "Give me DXF and CF2 for this box" | DXF / CF2 files (Pro plan) |
| Find a mockup | "3D mockup for a paper coffee bag" | Search results from the mockup library |
| Show a mockup in 3D | "Open the second one" | A link that opens the model in 3D |
| Work with your own projects | "List my projects, open the latest" | Your project list and a link to open one (needs sign-in) |
| Review inbox | "What is waiting for me?" | Items handed to 3D Studio or Drint AI, results waiting |
| Send a project to 3D Studio | "Send this project to 3D Studio" | A link that opens the project in 3D Studio |
The tool names behind this are list_dielines, get_dieline, make_dieline, search_mockups, open_mockup, list_my_projects, open_my_project, review_inbox and send_to_3d_studio.
How do I connect Drint MCP to ChatGPT or Claude?
Every assistant uses the same address, https://drint.io/mcp. Add it as a connector:
- Claude (web or desktop): open Customize → Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it Drint, paste the address and click Add.
- Claude Code: run
claude mcp add --transport http drint https://drint.io/mcp, then type/mcpto sign in. - ChatGPT: in Settings, open Apps & Connectors, turn on Developer mode under the advanced settings, and create an app named Drint with that address and OAuth sign-in.
- Meta Muse: if Drint is listed under Settings → Connectors, turn it on; if not, send the message "Connect to the Drint MCP server at https://drint.io/mcp".
Then:
- When the assistant first needs your account, you are sent to drint.io to sign in and click Allow.
- Start a chat and describe the box, bag or mockup you need.
The step-by-step version with the latest menu names is in the connection guide.
Finding mockups and listing dieline structures work without an account. Dieline files and your own projects need you to sign in.
Which plan do I need?
The Drint model is free to design, free to use dielines for design, and free to preview in 3D. You pay when you need files or mockup exports without a watermark. For MCP specifically:
| Capability | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Browse dieline structures and FEFCO/ECMA codes | Yes | Yes |
| Dieline PDF / AI / SVG at exact size | 1 per month | Unlimited |
| Die-maker files (DXF, CF2) | No | Yes |
| Search and open 3D mockups | Yes | Yes |
| Projects opened in 3D | With the watermark grid | Without the grid |
Limits reflect the current tool descriptions; check drint.io for the live plan terms before relying on them.
How accurate are the dimensions?
You state the size and the dieline is built to it. For boxes, the numbers you give must mean the same thing the die-maker expects, either inside or outside dimensions, so always say which: "inside 300×220×80 mm". If the assistant does not ask, add it to the prompt.
Before sending anything to print, run the file through preflight in Drint and confirm with your printer. A dieline from an AI chat is a starting point for production, not a replacement for the printer's approval.
What does a typical workflow look like?
- Ask for the structure. "I need a tuck-end carton for a 50 ml bottle, inside 40×40×110 mm."
- Check the options. The assistant lists matching dielines; you pick one.
- Get the file. Ask for PDF or SVG at that size.
- Preview in 3D. Open the design link or search mockups of similar packaging.
- Finish in Drint. Add artwork, run preflight, export CMYK PDF/X-4 and the handoff package.
How is this different from asking a general AI to draw a dieline?
A general chat assistant has no packaging geometry tool. It may describe a box or generate a drawing that looks right but has wrong fold lengths. Drint's MCP calls a real dieline engine and returns a file in a production format. It also returns structure codes you can quote to a printer.
What is in the dieline catalogue behind it?
The catalogue lists about 180 FEFCO (corrugated) and ECMA (folding carton) codes, plus Drint's own structures such as tuck-end boxes, mailers, rigid boxes, drawers, pillow boxes, sleeves, pouches, cups, labels and paper bags. Each comes with a default size in millimetres. Files come as PDF, AI or SVG, and DXF or CF2 for die-makers (Pro). Printing goes to CMYK PDF/X-4. Browsing the catalogue and getting a link to start a design on a die need no account.
Who is it for?
It is built for five groups. Packaging designers who need a fast starting dieline. Brand designers who want to show a client a 3D mockup. Agencies preparing pitch decks. Print shops that want to verify a structure. And brand owners in food, cosmetics and e-commerce specifying their first box.
What are the limits?
- The assistant can misunderstand a request. Verify the dimensions in the returned file.
- Free accounts have a monthly dieline file limit.
- Die-maker files require Pro.
- Mockups are generic models; your own artwork is applied in Drint.
What does a real request and response look like?
Request: "Create a mailer box 300×220×80 mm, inside dimensions, and export the dieline as PDF."
What happens behind the scenes: the assistant searches the dieline catalogue for a mailer structure, picks a matching FEFCO code, then asks Drint for the file at your dimensions. If you are not signed in, you are asked to sign in. You then receive the PDF or a link to it.
A good follow-up is "Now show me three 3D mockups of similar mailer boxes." The assistant calls the mockup search and returns candidates, each with a link to open in 3D.
How should I write prompts for better results?
- Give units and all three dimensions.
- Say inside or outside dimensions.
- Name the product and the use, for example "candle, e-commerce shipping".
- Name the output format: PDF, AI, SVG, or DXF/CF2 if you have Pro.
- Ask for a comparison table when choosing between structures.
Setup steps for each assistant are in the connection guide.
What data does the connection use?
The tools take parameters such as dimensions, structure codes, search terms and project identifiers. Account-bound actions, such as downloading files or opening your projects, require you to sign in to Drint. The assistant never sees your Drint password, and no Drint tool deletes anything or takes a payment. On Drint's Allow page you can tick View only, so the assistant can look at your projects and review inbox but makes no files and uses nothing on your plan. You can remove a connected assistant under Account → Sign-in & security → Connected apps. As with any AI assistant, do not paste confidential material into the chat unless your provider's terms allow it.
Try it
Add https://drint.io/mcp to your assistant and start with: "Create a mailer box 300×220×80 mm and export the dieline as PDF." Setup steps and example prompts are in the MCP connection guide. The structures it can draw are listed under dieline codes, and the mockup count is set out in Which is the largest 3D mockup library?.
