Trade tips

  • Give a lid-and-base box a contrasting lid or a ribbon tab so it opens easily.
  • Dark colour over the box edges cracks at the corners: choose a light ground or a dyed-through paper.
  • Coated (couche) paper prints photos sharply; laminate it so the folds do not crack.
  • Design straight on the die at your size: cut, crease and bleed are already drawn, so the printer can work from your file.

Questions

Is the collapsible rigid box mockup free?

Yes. Turning it in 3D, setting your own size and designing on it are free in the browser, and commercial and client work is allowed. On the Free plan 3D mockups carry a Drint watermark grid and pictures export at 1K; Pro removes the watermark and adds 4K pictures and 2K video.

Can I use my own size for the collapsible rigid box?

Yes. Type your size in mm and the mockup is rebuilt to scale, with its dieline.

Can I get the collapsible rigid box dieline for printing?

Yes. The die is drawn at the size you type. A free account downloads one SVG dieline a month; PDF / AI needs Pro; Pro has unlimited dielines, DXF / CF2 for the die-maker and the CMYK print PDF.

Can I put the collapsible rigid box in a scene with other products?

Yes. “Use this mockup” opens it in Drint 3D Studio, where you stage it with other products, props and light and export pictures or video.

Construction

A rigid base glued to a hinged board that forms the spine and lid, like a book cover. Two or four small magnets are milled into the board at the lid edge and the base front, then hidden under the wrap. Some are glued for good; collapsible ones ship flat and are set up for use, held by magnets or tape.

Choosing board and material

Greyboard of 1.5–2 mm for base and lid; the lid is sometimes thicker so it closes flat. Wrap of 128–157 gsm coated paper with lamination, or fine paper, leatherette or cloth for premium lines. Small neodymium magnets are usual; the maker chooses how many and how strong for the box size.

Finishing

Soft-touch with hot foil is the classic pair; an embossed logo on the lid and spot UV on a small motif. The spine folds most, so avoid dark, unlaminated colour there — the ink cracks along the hinge.

Preparing the print file

The lid wrap is one strip: lid face, spine, back of the base and the 15–20 mm turn-in. The base has its own wrap. Since the lid opens like a book, the inside of the lid is its own printed face — the place for a greeting or the brand's story. Mark the magnet spots so no foil or emboss sits on them.

Common mistakes

  • Foil or emboss over a magnet: the paper bulges and the effect looks uneven.
  • Pattern that doesn't run across the spine: the closed box shows a white or broken band at the back.
  • Forgetting the inside of the lid: the box opens on bare grey board or plain paper and loses its moment.

Questions and answers

Can a magnetic box fold flat?

There are two kinds: glued for good (sturdiest, finest) and collapsible (walls fold up for use). Collapsible saves storage and shipping volume, but each box must be set up by hand.

Will the magnets harm cards or phones?

The magnets are tiny and covered by board; for magnetic-stripe cards and mechanical watches, still place the tray a few centimetres from the magnets.

How does it feel different from a lid-and-base box?

A magnetic box opens one way like a book and the lid stays attached, so nobody looks for a place to put it; a lid-and-base box lifts off, which suits ribbon-tied gifts.
