A rigid base glued to a hinged board that forms the spine and lid, like a book cover. Two or four small magnets are milled into the board at the lid edge and the base front, then hidden under the wrap. Some are glued for good; collapsible ones ship flat and are set up for use, held by magnets or tape.
Greyboard of 1.5–2 mm for base and lid; the lid is sometimes thicker so it closes flat. Wrap of 128–157 gsm coated paper with lamination, or fine paper, leatherette or cloth for premium lines. Small neodymium magnets are usual; the maker chooses how many and how strong for the box size.
Soft-touch with hot foil is the classic pair; an embossed logo on the lid and spot UV on a small motif. The spine folds most, so avoid dark, unlaminated colour there — the ink cracks along the hinge.
The lid wrap is one strip: lid face, spine, back of the base and the 15–20 mm turn-in. The base has its own wrap. Since the lid opens like a book, the inside of the lid is its own printed face — the place for a greeting or the brand's story. Mark the magnet spots so no foil or emboss sits on them.
There are two kinds: glued for good (sturdiest, finest) and collapsible (walls fold up for use). Collapsible saves storage and shipping volume, but each box must be set up by hand.
The magnets are tiny and covered by board; for magnetic-stripe cards and mechanical watches, still place the tray a few centimetres from the magnets.
A magnetic box opens one way like a book and the lid stays attached, so nobody looks for a place to put it; a lid-and-base box lifts off, which suits ribbon-tied gifts.
